Latest invention of scientists from Columbia University is an artificial tree that can absorb carbon dioxide, a thousand times faster than real wood.
Leading researcher, professor of geophysics at Columbia University, Klaus Lackner, is developing the project for over 10 years and has hope that an artificial tree will be a very important tool to combat climate change.
Scientists will use their latest inventions to capture greenhouse gases emitted by motor vehicles or aircraft. Synthetic trees, which are similar to the cylinder, do not require direct sunlight and water to work properly. According to Lackner, the tree is flexible in size and can be placed almost anywhere.
Here’s how it works: synthetic wood collects greenhouse gases on the sorbent, cleans and removes carbon dioxide, and then releases it. Technology absorption of the gas resembles a sponge that collects water.
During the day, an artificial tree will be able to catch a ton of CO2, which is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted 20 vehicles. The technology is currently under development in the Research Technologies, a company based in Tucson, Arizona. Such inventions may well serve for the environment, but it is quite expensive - each synthetic tree is worth $ 30000, according to CNN.
Data provided by the Ministry of Transportation show that is currently in the United States is approximately 135,932,930 vehicles, which means that in order to absorb a number of these machines emitted carbon, the country will need a “plant” of the 6,8 millions of synthetic trees (that’s $ 204 billion). In connection with the current global economic crisis, the project is likely to remain under development for some time. Nevertheless, Lackner and his team are looking forward to defend his latest invention in full force. The researchers have dog
