Asylum applications from foreign refugees in Spain

The total number of first and follow-up applications relates to the year 2019. Please note that the number of decisions (i.e. acceptances or rejections) does not have to match this, as there may be pending asylum applications from previous years. Also, not all applications have to be finally processed within a calendar year. In addition, asylum proceedings can also be discontinued if the applicant can no longer be found or if the application is withdrawn.

Asylum applications from refugees from Spain

Spain is one of the few countries to which not only refugees immigrate. In 2019 alone, there were 62 asylum applications for citizens from Spain in foreign countries. The applications in Canada were the most successful.

Share of immigrants in the population from 1980 to 2015

In 2015 there were 5,852,953 immigrants in Spain. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The number also includes recognized refugees, but not yet asylum seekers. The information is based on the one hand on the results of censuses and on the other on projections by the United Nations Population Department. (Values of the graph in millions of immigrants)
