How is SAP software used

What is SAP

SAP is the short form used in everyday language for SAP AG, a German software manufacturer based in Walldorf. SAP AG was founded in 1972 by the five former IBM employees Claus Wellenreuther, Hans-Werner Hector, Klaus Tschira, Dietmar Hopp and Hasso Plattner. Today SAP AG is a globally active company with around 50,000 employees and a turnover of around 12 billion euros.

SAP products

In addition, the term SAP is also used colloquially for the software products of SAP AG. SAP AG creates so-called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, i.e. business software with which all processes such as materials management, accounting and personnel in a company can be recorded and evaluated.

One of the most famous products is SAP R / 3, which is made up of individual SAP modules. The most common modules include FI (Finance), CO (Controlling), MM (Material Management), SD (Sales and Distribution), PP (Production Planning) and HR (Human Resources). Each module represents an individual area of responsibility in the company.

In addition, a whole range of other products have now appeared under the term SAP Business Suite can be summarized: The core is SAP ERP, the former R / 3. In addition, there are the SAP SCM (Sypply Chain Management), SAP SRM (Supplier Relation Management) and SAP PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) packages, which supplement the basic package with additional functions if necessary. SAP CRM (Customer Relationship Management) for customer care is architecturally separated, but the data can be used in SAP ERP.

The so-called. SAP IS or Industry Solutions. These Industry solutions offer functions that are only required in individual cases: SAP for Retail for retail, SAP Banking for banks, SAP for Healthcare (formerly called IS-H) for hospitals and many others.

SAP solutions for medium-sized companies

The often very complex adaptation work to SAP ERP, which is carried out by SAP consultants, has resulted in SAP AG designing easier-to-use products for small and medium-sized companies.

SAP Business One

The SAP Business One product is specially designed for small and medium-sized companies with up to 100 employees. As ERP software, it also contains modules that are assigned to the individual areas of responsibility in the company. In this way, transactions from financial accounting, purchasing or production can be recorded. The software can be expanded with so-called AddOns and, for example, supplemented with reporting or export functions.

SAP Business All-in-One

In contrast to SAP Business One, SAP Business All-in-One is compatible with SAP ERP and is therefore intended for larger medium-sized companies that want to use all the advantages of a full-fledged ERP system.

SAP Business ByDesign

The relatively new SAP Business ByDesign contains functions from the areas of ERP and CRM and is also intended for medium-sized companies. In contrast to the other products, it is an on-demand solution, i.e. the software is not installed on the company's own computers, but operated in external data centers by SAP, which the customer accesses. The costs depend on the number of users. Adaptation is not possible to the same extent as with the other products, but this means less effort to introduce.

One of the new products from SAP AG is SAP HANA, a database solution for evaluating BW data in real time.
