Does Mercedes-Benz still come from Germany, Renault from France and Fiat from Italy? The answer: No - or at least yes and no ... That is why countries such as China, India, Mexico and the countries of Eastern Europe are particularly popular. These include, for example, the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary.

Requirements for the location where a car is being built

The prerequisites for a production site are simple: cheap wages and a favorable location. A favorable location means: low costs, good transport links, as few obstacles as possible such as strikes, wars, political guidelines or import and export tariffs.

Customs and wages costs are critical

Many car manufacturers only have components for their vehicles manufactured due to the sometimes high import and export duties. These components are then transported to the respective target market and assembled there into a finished car.

Due to the customs dispute between the USA and China, as well as the increased wages of Chinese workers and increasing competition from Chinese brands, many European carmakers are returning to their origins and returning to Europe.

Protecting core competencies for building cars

It has been decided not to outsource such a large proportion of cars with new technologies. The competition in the Asian countries is too great and the risk of losing core competencies is too great.

At Mercedes-Benz, for example, Hamburg is the high-tech location for electromobility solutions, Kamenz is one of three of its own battery factories, and Affalterbach is the location for the development, design and manufacture of the popular AMG engines.

The best-known German car brands are Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche and Volkswagen.

But do they really still produce 100 percent "Made in Germany"? Very clear answer: No!

The Audi Q3 is screwed together with the Seat Ibiza, Léon, Altea and Expo models in Martorell, Spain. The sports cars TT, RS3 and the A3 convertible from Audi, on the other hand, come from Györ in Hungary.

What do the production steps of a car look like?

Before a car model is even manufactured, it has to survive various "preliminary phases":

  1. It starts with strategic planning, the design phase and construction. Once these plans have been completed for the car model itself, the production capacities must also be taken into account.
  2. After a precise factory and production planning, the first production attempt then comes, followed by the pre-series.
  3. Once our car model has managed all of this, it will ultimately go into series production of the model.

The production steps are as follows:

  1. In the foundry, the cast parts are manufactured using the casting process. An example of this is the engine block.
  2. All sheet metal parts that are later joined together to form the body are manufactured in the press shop.
  3. To protect the body from corrosion, the parts go through one or more immersion baths and receive one or two protective layers.
  4. However, this is not yet the final decorative varnish or top coat.
  5. Before the car is finally given its final color with the top coat, unevenness must first be removed with a so-called filler.
  6. After the top coat has dried, the vehicle part is given a clear coat - so that it also shines nicely.
  7. But a car not only has to look good, it also has to drive. So we come to the manufacture of the chassis.
  8. The chassis consists of assemblies such as axles, brakes, shock absorbers, drive shafts and many more. Since it is largely made of metal, it is mostly machined.
  9. At the same time, the assemblies for the interior, the interior and the exterior (exterior) are also manufactured.
  10. After the gearbox and engine have also been built, all parts and assemblies as well as the body come to the vehicle assembly where everything is put together and missing parts are added.
  11. In the end, the functionality of the whole has to be tested and functionality ensured. There are still fine adjustments, such as setting the track.
  12. After successful quality control, the car can then leave the production hall and be transferred to its destination.

What are the cheapest cars that are being built?

If you are looking for cheap, reliable cars, you should look around especially at the small cars. Here, however, the cars that are built in Asia are particularly important. But also the models from Dacia, which are built in Romania, were able to expand their market shares enormously thanks to Dacia's challenge.
