US foreign policy

The United States of America has had a prominent position in international relations for decades. What distinguishes the USA from other great powers is the combination of outstanding capabilities in many areas: They have great military projection power, economic strength and, not least because of their cultural appeal, they exert international influence. The USA operates globally and comprehensively. Whatever the American government does or fails to do, it has lasting effects on the international system.

In the academic and practical discussion of American foreign policy, there are many factors to consider. This introductory volume first introduces the actors who influence the conception, design and implementation of American foreign policy. This is followed by an analysis of important policy areas, each of which has its own conditions that affect the actors' ability to act. The third part shows the developments and current challenges of important multilateral relations.

This textbook provides a systematic political science introduction to United States foreign policy. It is intended to provide a basic understanding of American foreign policy and to provide an overview of the actors, policy areas and relationships that are important in American foreign policy.
