What is perfusion

Perfusion is the process by which blood enters the pulmonary capillaries. Hence, the main function of perfusion is to supply blood efficiently, as required by gas exchange. In general, the two factors responsible for efficient gas exchange are the amount of air in the alveoli and the amount of blood in the pulmonary capillaries. Ventilation here is the process that is responsible for the movement of air into the space of the alveoli.

In addition, the volume of air entering the alveolus depends on the diameter of the airways. Here, the increased partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the alveoli causes the bronchioles to expand. On the other hand, the volume of blood that enters the blood capillaries depends on the diameter of the blood vessels. A higher partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli also causes the pulmonary arteries to expand, which means that relevant amounts of blood volume can be supplied, which are necessary for an efficient exchange of respiratory gases.

What is diffusion?

Diffusion is the movement of breathing gases through the breathing membrane of alveoli. Here oxygen, the gas required for cell respiration, penetrates from the air in the alveoli into the blood. On the contrary, carbon dioxide, a metabolic waste, displaces the air in the alveoli from the blood. However, diffusion is a passive process that allows different molecules to move through a concentration gradient.
