General information about India

The state of India emerged in 1947 from the collapse of the British colonial empire and its division into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. Today India with 1.2 billion inhabitants is the second most populous country in the world after China and is called the world's largest democracy. The geography of India stretches from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas in the north to the tropical palm-fringed beaches of the Kerala province in the south. The largest cities in the country are Mumbai in the west, Calcutta in the east and the centrally located capital Delhi.

The History of India: Religion and Spirituality
The long history of India is characterized by deep spirituality and is based on numerous legends and myths. Only the Indian empire of Emperor Ashoka, who lived in the 4th century BC, is documented. Spread Buddhism throughout Southeast Asia. Many centuries later, Islam followed from the west, which flourished in the Mughal Empire of the 16th century before India became a British colony in 1756. India gained independence in 1947 through the nonviolent resistance propagated by Mahatma Gandhi.

India today: multi-ethnic state with major problems
In the last few decades India experienced an enormous economic boom, which led to the formation of a new middle class. But India's ancient caste system, ailing rural infrastructure, severe environmental pollution and religious conflicts between Hindus and Muslims continue to pose major problems for the country.
