Wisdom what is a wise person
Wisdom: how do you get wise?
Wisdom: how do you get wise?
We all often make mistakes in life that we eventually regret. We are young, we don't know any better and we have our experiences. Had we acted differently then, we would probably have been spared a few problems. On the other hand, these experiences help us understand certain things in life that we would never understand otherwise. Over time, people become wiser, because experiences accumulate. But when does a person become wise? What is the essence of wisdom?
The "golden rule"
It is interesting to see that the same moral concept of wisdom can be found in all the great religions of the world. Basically, this idea of ethics says that a wise person would never put his own well-being above that of another. It is a principle of values and norms for each individual. One also speaks of the "golden rule".
"Whatever you want people to do to you, you also do it for them too." (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31)
"Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you." (Talmud, Shabbat 31a)
“Do not do injustice so that you do not suffer injustice” (Quran, Sura 2: 279)
“One should not behave towards others in a way that is uncomfortable for oneself; that is the essence of morality. ”(Mahabharata
“A state that is not pleasant or pleasant for me should not be for him either; and a state that is not pleasant or pleasant for me, how can I expose it to another? "(Samyutta Nikaya V, 353.35-354.2)
"Man should walk indifferently to worldly things and treat all creatures in the world as he himself would like to be treated." (Sutrakritanga I.11.33)
How do you define wisdom?
In the Duden, wisdom is described as "insightful intelligence based on life experience, maturity [learning] and distance from things" ¹. Psychology describes wisdom as the ability to give good judgments and advice in unpredictable life situations. It is a human development goal that one is trying to achieve.
But wisdom contains much more than that. To be a wise person also means to understand yourself and the other in a profound way and accordingly to act appropriately and to live a balanced life. Thus wisdom includes both understanding and compassion for others, but also your own self-knowledge.
"Wisdom means the understanding and acceptance of the complexity, indeterminacy, diversity and finiteness of human life. Wisdom also describes a deep insight into the structure of the world, life and society as well as a certain valuable ethical and moral attitude (ethics, development, moral ) and the associated ability to act (action). Knowledge and wisdom
Wisdom includes knowledge. In western epistemology, one always associates “knowledge” with the search for “truth”. There are different views of how knowledge is acquired.
in the rationalism it is assumed that the absolute truth does not have to be presented through sensory perception, but can also be determined through logical thinking. Plato assumed that this knowledge can be deductively derived.
Another conception of the acquisition of knowledge was that empiricismthat Aristotle represented. Aristotle was of the opinion that knowledge can only be gained from sensory perception, experience and observation and not from logical thinking.
The representatives of Kant and Hegel tried to combine rationalism and empiricism by assuming that knowledge results from sensory perception and logical thinking together. In the course of time, other theories of knowledge acquisition were added, ranging between rationalism and empiricism.
Especially the knowledge which Life experiences based is an important part of wisdom. Because the confrontation with complicated life experiences makes it possible to learn from them and to become wise. How wise a person is, however, has nothing to do with their intelligence, education, or social status.
How do I become wise?
It can be said that people who have had a lot of experience in their life act wiser than those who are still lacking in experience. But to be a wise person, you need other qualities.
Open-mindedness towards the "new"
It is important to have a certain open-mindedness towards changes or new perspectives. That means not to be afraid of these changes, but to rate them as interesting and positive.
Understanding of one's own feelings
It is advisable to keep yourself occupied and explore what you are feeling. Where are my strengths and weaknesses? What are my fears and why do I have them? For our further development, it is important to come to terms with yourself and to know how to best deal with your own feelings.
The empathy describes the human empathy. This means that a person is able to recognize, understand and sympathize with the emotions and thoughts of others. Without empathy, it is also more difficult for us to reflect on our own behavior.
Mastering complex situations
Dealing with the complexity of life requires not only knowledge, but also skill. It is not just a matter of finding solutions yourself, but of getting other people to find a solution.
You can't control everything in life and crises and conflicts keep showing us these limits. The serenity and joy of life despite certain setbacks and negative experiences show how some people can deal with the uncontrollability.
Older people in particular are considered to be very wise. This is mainly because they have had to master many difficult conflicts and experiences in their lives. Our grandmothers and grandfathers have seen so much. You have been through wars and overcoming crises. They seem so confident and relaxed that it amazes when you hear what they have already had to go through. You have already learned to deal with certain problems and to accept them. You had time to get to know yourself better and to act more self-reflective. There is still so much we can learn from these wise people. Let's listen to what they have to say so that we may eventually become as wise as they are.
