AWS Outposts

AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that delivers the same AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any data center, collocation room, or on-premise facility for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS Outposts is ideal for workloads that require low-latency access to on-premise systems, local computing, data residency, and migration of applications with local system dependencies.

AWS services such as data processing, storage, database and other services are run locally on Outposts, so you can access the full range of AWS services available in the region to run your on-premise applications with familiar AWS services and tools to create, manage and scale.

Outposts is available as a 42U rack that can be scaled from 1 rack to up to 96 racks to create pools of compute and storage capacity. Starting in 2021, Outposts will be available in two smaller form factors, namely 1U and 2U rack servers for locations with limited space or capacity requirements. More information on the smaller Outposts form factors can be found here.

A VMware variant of AWS Outposts will also be available soon. VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts provides a fully managed software-defined data center (SDDC) that runs on-premises on the AWS Outposts infrastructure.
