Prince

Prince Rogers Nelson was one of the most important and successful musicians of the last decades.

The singer, guitarist, actor and director was born on June 7, 1958 into a family that was not only large, but also a musical one: Prince had seven siblings, and his parents had met through playing jazz together. Since his debut “For You” in 1978, hardly a year has passed without a new album, barely a few months without news about the singer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and entertainer.

Still, Prince has always managed not to make his music a marginal phenomenon. He last released two studio albums at once, in 2014, with “Art Official Age” and “PlectrumElectrum”, was on tour with his band 3RDEYEGIRL and campaigned against police violence in the USA. Not only musically but also optically, Prince is a chameleon that is constantly changing and yet hardly seemed to age. From his “Prince” era to The Symbol / The Artist / The Artist Formerly Known As Prince back to “Prince”, the artist's creativity and eccentricity had not worn off either.

On April 21, 2016, he died of a fentanyl overdose. He was 57 years old.

Prince would have turned 60

“Nothing Compares 2 Him”: Prince would have turned 60 on June 7, 2018 (Photo: NPG Records) It is no exaggeration to say that Prince Rogers Nelson was one of the most important and successful musicians of the last few decades. // His musical legacy is gigantic, depending on the method of counting he has released over 40 albums - not to mention the countless unreleased songs that are stored in his "Vault". Prince would have turned 60 on June 7, 2018 - we are taking this as an opportunity to rummage through the ByteFM archive again. // Members of our Friends of ByteFM Friends Association can listen to numerous special programs there. Unreleased & amp; Rare: Prince at ByteFM No one at ByteFM has dealt with the “Purple One” as intensively as the self-proclaimed Prince fetishist Norman Müller. “An artist who has shaped pop music more than few in the last 40 years,” he said in his two-hour ByteFM free game, just one day after his death. // In May 2016 he called it "a utopia incarnate of crossing borders". "Prince is funk and Prince is soul, he is rock and is electro-pop, Prince is black and Prince is white, Prince is a girl and Prince is a boy." The Hamburg DJ started on May 5th / May 2011 Lucky Drama put together a six-part collection of musical pearls with a lot of love and effort in the show Groove Crates. As he himself described: “These Prince Selections are not exhausted 'best of' compilations that any record company knocks out in order to earn money again from the hits.” Instead, his extensive series offers the opportunity to dive into the world of genius, without having to deal with the hit songs.

Prince recorded his first songs at the Moonsound studio in Minneapolis when he was almost of legal age. // The news about him was not always of a musical nature: a spectacular dispute with his record company, new bands, new names that emerged from the litigation, an often misunderstood statement about the end of the internet, a legendary Superbowl halftime show in the downpour , Engagements as an actor and director (including "Purple Rain", whose soundtrack also won an Oscar). Still, Prince has always managed not to make his music a marginal phenomenon. He last released two studio albums at once, in 2014, with "Art Official Age" and "PlectrumElectrum", was on tour with his band 3RDEYEGIRL and campaigned against police violence in the USA ("Baltimore"). // "Creep" by Radiohead (heard below) or "Best Of You" by the Foo Fighters. For many, Prince provided the sound of their own youth, added the necessary pinch of funk to the pop business. And so he is now being paid tribute not only by those with whom he has worked, but also from other quarters.

Even if Prince (currently on the road again with Afro) looks like at the beginning of his career, the singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist is actually 55 years old today. The world star Prince and the small independent ByteFM - how does that actually fit together? Not that Prince ever delivered really bad shows live - even the last concert in the Cologne Arena, a rather poor show for his standards in 1998, was enthusiastically received by the audience and critics. // Even the most attentive observer of his career has only revealed in the last few years that Prince emerged victorious over the long term in the mid-90s media-effective fight against the music business establishment (keyword "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince") Has the degree of artistic independence that some “indie” musicians dream of: giving away albums with daily newspapers or monthly magazines, announcing arena shows shortly before the concert (in the case of the Cologne concert it was 6 weeks), as a headliner at renowned festivals at short notice play here, but also here on program slots set up especially for him - Prince does what he wants, with whom he wants it, when he wants it. // Even the most attentive observer of his career has only revealed in the last few years that Prince emerged victorious over the long term in the mid-90s media-effective fight against the music business establishment (keyword "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince") Has a degree of artistic independence that some “indie” musicians dream of: giving away albums with daily newspapers or monthly magazines, announcing arena shows shortly before the concert date (in the case of the Cologne concert it was 6 weeks), short-term headlining at renowned festivals play here, but also here on program slots set up especially for him - Prince does what he wants, with whom he wants it, when he wants it. Does that mean that he has a role model function for musicians striving for freedom and ambition? // Certainly not, because he earned the status that allowed him to make his extravagant moves in the 80s as a member of the machinery whose rules he has been subverting for years. On the other hand, Prince would not have retained that status if it weren't for one of the best live performers on the planet. This thesis has to be checked in Cologne next Thursday.

Official German premiere of the new Prince song at ByteFM

His homeland came first: The Prince song "Cause And Effect" was presented to the public for the first time on February 26th on Minnesota's radio station 89.3 - The Current. The new track is officially celebrating its German premiere here at ByteFM. // He is one of the few musicians who, despite their megastar status, have managed to remain innovative for a decade and release pioneering albums. For Prince, that golden period was in the 1980s. In the following decade, the media interest waned despite increasing eccentricity (name change, spectacular Zoff with the ex-record company Warner Bros.) - this did not detract from the multi-instrumentalist's exuberant output. // Albums like "The Gold Experience" (1995) and "The Rainbow Children" (2001) can easily compete with his 80s exploits, but hits were after Prince's first indie release "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World "in 1994, nothing for ten long years. // Albums like "The Gold Experience" (1995) and "The Rainbow Children" (2001) can easily compete with his 80s exploits, but hits were after Prince's first indie release "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World "in 1994, and that for ten long years. On the one hand, this was due to the largely weak material that Prince was producing at the time, on the other hand, he had little interest in following the rules of the music industry after his fall-out with Warner Bros. and instead experimented with alternative forms of music distribution. // Already on "Exodus", an album of his side project New Power Generation released in 1995, there was talk of music downloads. In 1997 Prince was one of the first musicians to publish an album exclusively on the Internet. In 2004 Prince made his comeback in the USA with "Musicology".

Dear Norman, Your program Sounds Outta Range is celebrating its tenth anniversary these days. // I still make beats in my own private room, but on the computer because of the neighbors. Anyone who talks about you inevitably has to talk about Prince too. What was your moment of revelation? In 1992 I was twelve when I went to a dinosaur exhibition with my school class in the Übersee-Museum in Bremen. // Before the return trip, we were allowed to walk around the city center for an hour, and that's when I bought my first Prince album. Up to now I knew a few singles and videos, but the bus ride home with the “Love-Symbol” record in the Discman was the life-changing event, I think. // The highlights of my fan career were certainly the official German premieres of Prince songs at Sounds Outta Range and to have been invited to the last two German Prince concerts in Berlin and Cologne together with a handful of listeners.

Money Don't Matter 2 Night? Prince estate cleared

April 2016, the American singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Prince Rogers Nelson died of an overdose of pain medication. After Prince's death, many fans and friends had felt part of his family and referred to themselves as the brother, sister, children or wife of the deceased musician. // In Minnesota, a court has now decided how the pop star's estate will continue: His (biological) sister Tyka Nelson and five other half-siblings are the legal heirs, while his large fan family is left empty-handed. Prince died on April 21, 2016, at the age of 57 at his Paisley Park estate in Minneapolis. // Most recently, one year after the artist's death, the sound engineer and music producer George Ian Boxill wanted to release six songs, which he recorded with Prince between 2006 and 2008, as a mini-album "Deliverance". That had been stopped by a court.

What reads almost bipolar on paper makes perfect sense in Dury's musical cosmos. His last album "Prince Of Tears" already showed him as a master of ambivalence, balancing with contagious nonchalance between mud-hole poetry and orchestral glamor. // Against superficial fashion bloggers, desperate alpha males, social media voyeurs. And against Carla's new boyfriend and his incredibly ugly pants. Did Dury present himself on "Prince Of Tears" as the inviolable "Mr. Maserati ”, he is much more vulnerable on“ The Night Chancers ”. // Dury still has a great talent for finding the filthiest basslines in England - only to combine them with noble string ornaments and choir arrangements. If this combination was still a nice weirdness on “Prince Of Tears”, it opens up completely together with Dury's new vulnerability.
