What are Shopify's most popular payment gateways?
Payment gateways, also known as online payment processors, are an essential part of any online store. Without it, you cannot receive payments from your customers. Depending on where you are in the world, there are many of these payment gateways to choose from. There is no perfect solution here as there are advantages and disadvantages associated with each. We're going to review some of the most popular Shopify payment gateways here.
Note that this list is limited to Shopify and you may have gateways that are not on the list. The first factor to consider when choosing your payment gateway is your location.
Cost is the next largest factor. This also determines your profit margins and how you have to calculate a pricing structure. Not only do you look at the prices per transaction, you also look at the monthly payments that some payment processors charge additionally. You have to find out what is more profitable for you, whether there is a higher transaction rate and no monthly costs or cheaper transaction rates and thus a low monthly fee. Everything is a math game.
So there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but if you are just starting out we would go for a payment gateway with no monthly costs and once your orders reach a decent level you can review your options to see which ones are more profitable for you are.
The time it takes to get your payment gateway up and running varies between different providers. For example, PayPal can be set up in less than a day, while Sage Pay can take around 4-5 weeks. What are the options? There are dozens of vendors out there, in this article we're going to take a look at the pros and cons of some of the main gateways for Shopify merchants of all sizes.
1. Shopify Payments
If you're using Shopify, it's definitely worth taking a look at Shopify's own payment platform. Shopify already charges a standard 2.2% transaction fee for using the platform. This fee is waived if you choose Shopify’s payment gateway and thus effectively halves your transaction fee. The setup process is quick as you simply have to fill out a form to get started. Prices vary depending on the Shopify plan. Payments can take up to 3 business days to reach you. You will then also receive a free card reader that you can use to accept physical payments.
As a payment gateway developed by an e-commerce provider, it offers a number of advantages. This includes better integration with the backend of your business and lower transaction rates. Here are a few reasons why Shopify uses its own payment gateway:

We can't talk about payment gateways without mentioning the payment gateway giant “PayPal”. This payment gateway is so big that it has outgrown its parent company eBay and become a unit of its own. PayPal can be set up in less than a day and has options for free and paid merchant accounts. It also has a great support system in case you run into any problems.
PayPal has two fee options:
1.9% + 20 cents per transaction (sales volume of up to EUR 55,000 per month) or
3.4% of all transactions + 20 cents (sales volume less than EUR 1,500 per month)
So you have to take this into account when calculating.
It also has a mobile-optimized checkout, accepts international payments, and allows your customers to pay directly from your PayPal account.
Worldpay was founded in 1989 and is possibly the second largest payment gateway platform after PayPal. Worldpay is available in almost 120 countries and there is a helpful support and sales team.
With the fee variants, Worldpay has three options:
Pay as you go: EUR 25 setup fee, 10 cents per transaction.
Fixed monthly: from EUR 49.99 including transactions up to a specified threshold.
Standard: Monthly fee of EUR 19.95, 10 pence per transaction. Separate debit and credit transaction rates.
With Shopify's integration with Stripe, merchants can easily set up payments for their business. It is a very popular payment solution because it is easy to integrate, has a clear price structure, and recurring invoices and direct debits can be set up.
With Stripe, you pay by transaction with no setup or monthly fees:
1.4% + 20 cents for European cards
2.9% + 20 cents for non-European countries
For direct debits in Europe you pay 1% of the transaction (maximum 5 EUR) + 20 cents.
Klarna has helped thousands of retailers give their customers the option to use the "buy now, pay later" model. But how does it work with dealers?
You have no setup or monthly fees. Klarna uses a simple "per transaction" structure that decreases as the volume of sales increases:
From 2.49% to 2.19% and then 1.99% per transaction as the sales volume increases.
It helps your customers to pay and offers them flexible payment options without the risk for the merchant. Even if a customer is in default, the retailer receives the money - the risk is therefore with Klarna.
6. Amazon Pay
So many people have an Amazon account these days, and this option allows customers to pay with their Amazon details in your store. This allows them to quickly and easily use a name that they already trust.
However, your fees need to be weighed carefully as they can beat low volume traders. If your customers buy from you through this payment gateway, it can take a few days for the money to reach your account.
3.4% + 20 cents if your business deals less than EUR 1,500 per month, or
1.4% + 20 cents for higher volume stores selling more than EUR 55,000 per month.
7. Sage Pay
Sage Pay is a popular Shopify payment platform here in England that your customers can use to pay via PayPal if they wish. Sage Pay offers several pricing options:
The lowest option is EUR 19.90 for 350 transactions.
The next step is EUR 45 for another 500 transactions.
A bespoke business plan is also available, in which the fees are individually tailored to you. This is required if you have more than 3,000 monthly transactions.
As you can see, there are plenty of tradeoffs to consider when choosing which Shopify payment gateway you choose. So make sure you do your research and find out the following key points:
Account setup time
Transaction fee options and how they affect your profit margins
How long it will take to receive your payments
Protection against fraudulent payments
Technical support system.
