Civil engineering is one of the most important sub-areas of the building industry, in which all trades work in one way or another. While building construction includes all construction activities that deal with the construction of residential and commercial properties, civil engineering includes those work below the surface of the earth. The term earth's surface is somewhat misleading in this context, as the boundary between civil engineering and civil engineering is often drawn at the level of the traffic routes. This demarcation also gives rise to the type of structures that are built as part of civil engineering.

Foundation and foundations

An area of ​​civil engineering that is important for house construction concerns the creation of the foundation - the so-called foundation. Its great importance for house construction is that the foundation acts as a seam between the structure and the ground. Therefore The foundation must also meet special requirements, which result, among other things, from the use of a property, the load distribution and of course the subsoil. Floor slabs and basement tubs are primarily used in house construction today.

A basement tub is installed where pressing water is to be expected. It is designed to be impermeable to water - either using appropriate masonry or sealing with bitumen. On the other hand, the floor slab has spread over the past few years as an inexpensive and quick-to-erect alternative to the basement tub. The building owners should have the foundation and the erection of the foundation carried out by professionals - after all, the entire subsequent building rests on it.

Other areas of civil engineering

Civil engineering is by no means limited to the foundation for buildings. Rather, it is only a small area of ​​civil engineering. Canal construction is one of the areas in which civil engineering techniques are used. After all, the property must first be developed before construction can begin - without ducts in which cables are laid, practically an impossibility. The same applies of course to path construction or horticulture, which are included in the subsection of earthworks. Earthworks because during the work that occurs, soil is removed, moved and finally compacted again.

For many builders and new homeowners, the design of the property - in addition to the actual house construction - is certainly one of the most important activities in civil engineering. If you want to lend a hand yourself, you should inform yourself very precisely beforehand about the soil and its properties and also keep an eye on the effort. Working on 400 square meters with just a pick and shovel is cost-effective at first glance, but time-consuming and exhausting. For larger earthworks, it is worth using heavy equipment.

Civil engineering on your own

Many builders want to lend a hand in building their own houses and in this way save on construction costs. In civil engineering, however, some work should always be done by craftsmen. Otherwise, mistakes in the construction of the foundation can have catastrophic consequences, as the statics of the subsequent building are directly dependent on how stable the foundation is. In gardening or building paths, even when excavating for sewer construction, do-it-yourselfers can, on the other hand, lend a hand without hesitation. However, they should seek professional advice in the event of any problems.
