Bananas are very healthy, but overdoing them could harm your body.

The banana is valued as a quick snack because it fills you up and quickly supplies the body with energy.

But be careful: the banana owes its energy primarily to carbohydrates; only eight percent of the calories are made up of fats and proteins.

So if you eat too many bananas but not enough other fruits and vegetables, the body lacks important proteins, fat, calcium, vitamin D and iron.

Above all, bananas are rich in potassium and magnesium, and 100 grams contain these nutrients:

  • 30 mg of magnesium
  • 22 mg of phosphorus
  • 8 mg calcium
  • 1 mg sodium

In addition, the fruit mainly contains vitamin C, namely 12 mg per 100 g of banana.

In addition, 21 g of carbohydrates, 2 g of fiber, but only 1.1 g of protein and 0.2 g of fat can be found in a banana. 100 g of banana have 95 calories.

Do bananas make you fat?

Bananas are not a high-calorie food, but 90 percent of the calories come from carbohydrates.

So consuming a lot of them can lead to weight gain and also raise blood sugar levels.

Reading tip

In the case of green bananas that are not yet fully ripe, the carbohydrates are starch. The further the ripening process progresses, the more starch is converted into sugar.

This is particularly noticeable in the sweet taste and a bright yellow skin.

How many bananas a day are okay?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) summarizes this under the rule “5 a day” and recommends 250 grams of fruit.

A healthy mix makes sense here, so you shouldn't only eat bananas. One to a maximum of three, depending on the size of course, should be fine for most adults.

It is important to also consume other nutritious fruits and vegetables, as well as lean sources of protein and healthy fats.
