Engineering is a demanding field of study and work. They are also called engineering sciences because engineering scientists deal with research, development, construction, production and testing of technical devices. These can be small machines, large systems, cars, smartphones or kitchen appliances. But structures such as bridges, tunnels, canals or dams are also results of engineering. Classic subjects in engineering studies

The classic subjects of engineering include the degree courses in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and electrical engineering. All three subjects convey general knowledge; as a rule, you can specialize in a sub-area during the course of your studies. But there are also courses that prepare you for a very specific subject from the start. This includes, for example, the subject of renewable energies / energy technology - here you deal with alternative energy sources such as wind, sun and biogas. In the vehicle technology department, on the other hand, you try to answer questions about the future of traffic: you calculate, simulate and test, for example, new functions, new accessories or completely new vehicles and their safety. If you study precision engineering and microtechnology, you will develop the smallest components for measurement, control and regulation technology, for example specifically for medical technology or space travel. Incidentally, there is also a degree program for the latter subject. If you are enrolled in the field of aerospace engineering, you will deal with aircraft and the associated technical requirements. But you can also focus on other areas and opt for materials science, mining, medical technology, architecture, optical technologies, mechatronics, nanotechnology, physical technology, production technology, ship and marine technology, process technology, urban and spatial planning, traffic technology, surveying or industrial engineering.

Degree programs in which engineering sciences play a role

There are also courses in which you learn a lot of other content and still deal with engineering fundamentals. These interdisciplinary courses include, for example, the subject of biotechnology: During the course you will develop new drugs and deal with the efficient use of microorganisms in food. You will learn technical and biological basics, including engineering measurement and process technology. In the building technology department, you plan and build building technology components and systems. In addition to scientific subjects and IT content, you will also learn about electrical engineering and the field of renewable energies. And you will also come into contact with engineering in the environmental protection course. You will primarily deal with natural sciences, mathematics, economics, legal issues and ecology, but also with plant and process engineering. Should you find in these subjects that you would rather concentrate entirely on engineering, you can shift your focus in this direction in a subsequent master’s degree.

You need these qualities to study engineering

Anyone who cannot do anything with technical processes, math and physics or chemistry is definitely wrong in studying engineering. Because the courses at the university deal with all of these topics. In addition to a great interest in technology and the natural sciences, having fun dealing with people is an advantage, because as an engineer you often only achieve your goals in teamwork. Depending on your engineering focus, you should also be able to draw and have a creative streak. It is also an advantage if you enjoy planning and coordinating. In order to get one of the coveted university places, you have to be able to prove a pre-study internship at some universities. Sometimes prospective students also have to fulfill a certain numerus clausus or pass an university's own aptitude test. Knowledge of English is also important during your studies and in the subsequent job.
