An average starting salary, i.e. the salary that awaits you after training and studies, is according to salary.de according to the current status (07/2020) in the fashion industry around 26,000 - 43,000 euros per year (gross).

How does this wide range come about?

Quite clearly: a distinction must be made here between the various professional fields. The salaries in service professions (salesperson, fashion consultant, tailor) are significantly lower than those in management (marketing manager, sales manager, product manager), which in turn often do not match those of textile technicians can keep up (textile engineer, production manager, textile machine builder).

Factors influencing the salary

Salaries in the fashion industry fluctuate a lot. Many factors affect what is in the account at the end of the month. It is therefore hardly possible to make a clear statement on the subject of salary. But we want to offer you at least some orientation:

As already mentioned: It depends on what you do. The more technical know-how you have, the more companies depend on you and accordingly pay well.

Technicians, for example, have very specific knowledge and are not easy to replace. No wonder they often top the payrolls. According to the Stepstone Salary Report 2020, engineers earn around 65,000 euros (gross) per year as specialists and managers, i.e. with some professional experience and initial personal responsibility. Textile engineers can orientate themselves well on this.

Studied textile and clothing technicians should use the figures for technical professions as a guide in this report: At around 46,000 euros (gross) annually, however, earnings are significantly lower. The average salary of fashion designers is similar on average and will tend to be lower than that of textile engineers. Since they are often self-employed, it is rather difficult to determine the income.


Those who lead colleagues, lead a team or an entire department and thus take on a lot of responsibility are better paid than those without a management function.


In fashion design, the degree is less important (whether bachelor, master or apprenticeship) - in the end, talent and whether you are self-employed or work as an employee count.

In fashion management, the degree can have a faster impact on your career. Those with a bachelor's degree generally advance to management positions faster than those with commercial training. If you can even show a master’s degree, you may have better cards in the salary negotiation.

Professional experience in the fashion sector is not to be despised. The more you have of it, the better you will be in your skills and can take on more demanding tasks, which will be remunerated accordingly.


Large companies often pay better than smaller ones. Sure, the large established corporation can simply spend more money than a small, newly founded start-up.


Regardless of the industry: If you look at the average salaries of the federal states, the south wins. Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria often top the salary scales. Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia also tend to be in the upper part. The salary tends to be significantly lower in the north of Germany and in Berlin. The eastern German federal states bring up the rear - salaries are often still lower here than elsewhere in Germany. In return, of course, the cost of living is usually cheaper.


So what you earn after your fashion studies depends on many individual factors. If you want to earn a lot, you should aim for leadership positions. The best way to achieve this is through a good degree, years of professional experience, ongoing training and, of course, with a large portion of motivation.

Tips for negotiating salaries

Unfortunately, there is no perfect process that you can tick off in a checklist. The circumstances of a salary negotiation are far too different for that and not every boss attaches great importance to the same things and only wants or can only pay a certain amount.

However, there are a few things to consider:

  • Prepare yourself well: Take notes on particularly good performances and ideas over a longer period of time in order to have arguments ready.
  • Make realistic demands: Find out what they earn on the Internet, among friends, or even maybe from colleagues.
  • Set the desired salary a little higher to ensure room for negotiation (but not too high!)
  • Think about alternatives if the employer no longer wants to pay: the monthly ticket for the train, membership in the fitness studio, a fuel voucher or retirement provision can also relieve you financially. And the employer can take it off. Sometimes he prefers that to paying off the money.
  • Signaling readiness for further training - in other words: You will not rest on a higher salary.
