Areas of application
Almost everything that could previously only be made with metal in the field of dentures can now be made from zirconia with the highest degree of precision and safety: crowns, bridges (the latest technology from the market leader Wieland with the Zeno® system even allows the production of 14 -unit bridges), inlays, implant superstructures and even the support crowns for telescopic prostheses.
Zircon is very hard and has a very high flexural strength. Due to the lighter color and in connection with specially matched ceramics, nowadays aesthetically and functionally flawless dentures can be produced for both the anterior and posterior areas.
Zirconium oxide is absolutely reaction-free, i.e. no traces are released into the organism. This dental prosthesis, made from special ceramics, is therefore absolutely biocompatible and can also be used on very sensitive patients. In addition, it is a high-strength material that is extremely resilient and long-lasting.
Due to the transparency and color properties of the material, extremely aesthetic dentures can be made from zirconium oxide, which can hardly be distinguished from natural teeth.
Metal-free and modern
Instead of the metal framework for conventional crowns and bridges, a zirconium core is used. Disadvantages that this metal construction entails are thus eliminated.
Sensitivity to cold and heat are a thing of the past.
The light color of the zircon prevents the formation of dark edges on the crown edge, which can be very annoying and unaesthetic, especially in the anterior region. Zircon is non-allergenic and completely biocompatible and therefore very suitable for patients who are allergic to metals or who cannot tolerate the metal taste in the mouth.
Boundaries of zircon
Even if the technology of zirconia processing makes almost everything possible today, there are also limits to it. Zircon bridges are not suitable for patients who grind or chew foreign objects.
Zirconium bridges should also be avoided if the cross-section of the bridge connectors is less than 10 mm² (this is checked by the computer program in the laboratory).
Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is radioactive to a small extent. The prescribed maximum exposure dose is, however, well below the limit.
How does this work? Example based on a bridge
A bridge made of zircon is made as follows:
As with other dentures, the dentist takes an impression after preparing the teeth. A model made of special plaster of paris is made from the impression. This plaster model is recorded in the dental laboratory with a special scanner and digitized and saved as a computer file.
This file contains the virtual impression of the tooth preparation. On this virtual, three-dimensional model, the dental technician models the shape of the future bridge on the screen.
The computer model produced in this way is then sent to a CNC milling machine via a data cable. The machine now mills the bridge within minutes from an industrially manufactured zirconium blank (a zirconium block manufactured in the factory).
After the zircon framework has been milled, it is given its final hardness in a furnace. The dental technician then veneers the bridge with specially matched ceramics.
Zirconium oxide dentures are one of the highest quality types of dentures. In particular, processing in the dental laboratory is sometimes quite complex and therefore causes high costs. Using a price comparison, however, you can compare the costs of different dentists and find fair offers. Because due to its excellent material properties, this material is currently probably the best material for dentures.
