1st partial exam: Fri 10.12.2010
2nd partial exam: Mon 21.02.2011
Repeat exam: Thursday, March 24, 2011
The exam consists of two partial exams in which 100 points can be achieved each. At least 100 points must be achieved from both partial exams together. In the repeat exam, 200 points can be achieved, of which 100 points are required to pass.

This book is a valuable addition to the lecture, which is why I will set a reading task every week with which you can prepare, review and deepen the lecture material. The Vollhardt goes far beyond the subject matter of the OC 1 lecture, much is dealt with in more detail in the OC 2. At the end of your bachelor's degree, however, you have to know and master what the Vollhardt says.

This book also covers the material you need to get your bachelor's degree well. The structure is a little different from the lecture, which is perhaps not bad at all, because it allows you to see the lecture material in a different context. Many beautiful pictures, but very colorful for my personal taste. What I like a lot are the short biographies in the margin.

Not a comprehensive theoretical textbook, but a valuable helper in the laboratory. Regardless of the edition, it can be useful to you in the laboratory for a lifetime. You won't need it this semester, but it is highly recommended for the organic internship in the next semester.

The title of Chapter 2 is a bit misleading, it is about basic concepts and about alkanes.

The chemistry of the carbonyl group is central to organic chemistry and biochemistry. You have to internalize and master chapters 17.5-17.9 in particular.
10th week (03.01. - 07.01.) Aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids
Vollhardt Chapter 18 "Enols and Enones", Chapter 19 "Carboxylic acids" (excluding 19.12)
18.1-18.5 in particular are essential basics. Once you understand that (and why) carbonyl compounds are electrophilic and enolates are nucleophilic, all of the following reactions are just variations on one subject.
11th week (January 10th - January 14th) Carboxylic acid derivatives, dicarbonyl compounds
Vollhardt Chapter 20 "Derivatives of carboxylic acids and mass spectrometry", Chapter 23 "Dicarbonyl compounds and acyl anion equivalents" (excluding 23.4)
We do not deal explicitly with mass spectrometry in this lecture. You can save 7/20, 8/20, and 9/20 for later. For 20.6 (amides), read also 21.5 and 21.6 (representation of amines) and compare the reactions. Acyl anion equivalents only appear in the OC II lecture, but it is of particular interest to biochemists.
12th week (January 17th - January 21st) Sugar, amino acids
Vollhardt Chapter 5.4 "Fischer projection", Chapter 24 "Carbohydrates" (excluding 24.10, 24.11), Chapters 26.1-26.4, 26.9 "Amino acids, peptides and proteins"
Prepare 5.4 well: we will no longer discuss the Fischer projection in detail in the lecture.
13th week (January 24th - January 28th) aromatics

14th week (31.01. - 04.02.) Aromatics
