Around 7 billion people currently live on earth. But how many were there in total? Using an extensive formula, demographers have estimated the historical world population. What do you think?

We cannot know how many people have ever lived on earth. But because we are still interested, a study, Link opens in a new window by the Population Reference Bureau, estimated the historical world population - with the help of an extensive statistical analysis:

  • The year 50,000 BC marks the beginning of modern mankind. Set. The population size at this point in time: two people.
  • The researchers estimated birth rates, fertility margins, and the average lifespan of the population at various points in history. They calculated the size and growth of the population for different periods (see table below).
  • Environmental disasters were also included in the calculation: For example, the plague claimed an estimated 25 million lives in the 14th century - at that time a significant proportion of the world's population.

The result of the researchers: 108 billion people have lived altogether.

  • Commentary by Viktor Koss, Ulm - Zrenjanin
Subject - Parents and each parent further than the subject has a pair of parents. etc. The numbers you get will astonish everyone. According to this, around year 1 after Ch. 2 to the power of 60 = 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 ancestors of today's test subject should have lived. The sum of all foreshadowing has not yet been calculated. Obviously impossible, because you have to calculate the collision. Even so, the number 108 billion seems too low.

  • Commentary by U. Borner, Luzern
So if between 450,000,000 and 500,000,000 people lived in the 14th century, the 25 million plague deaths are not really a third of the world's population. A zero, a comma or a "percent" must have crept into the calculation somewhere ;-).

In the 14th century AD, the world population was hardly 75 million.
