US Senator: Washington should not help Ukraine to pay debt to Russia

The United States and other countries should take the necessary steps to help Ukraine avoid payment of Russia’s debt in the amount of $ 3 billion, said Sputnik Senator Chris Murphy, who is a member of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
“The international community must understand the need for us of the steps that Ukraine will give a legal basis to withdraw from the payment of this debt,” - said Murphy.
US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said earlier that he would hold a briefing behind closed doors with the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, to discuss a situation with Ukraine’s debt.
“I do not think that Ukraine owes at least something to give back to Russia“, - said the senator.

The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine in August announced an agreement on the restructuring of the external commercial debt totaling about $ 18 billion. It is expected that Ukraine will be immediately written off 20% of the principal debt repayment of the remaining amount will be transferred from the 2015-2023 to the 2019-2027 years.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on Tuesday ordered the initiation of the restructuring of the public debt and suspension of payments from September 23 on a number of restructured liabilities. The restructuring, in particular, apply to Russian Eurobonds repurchased $ 3 billion, but the suspension of payments of these securities does not apply.
Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov has repeatedly stated that Russia does not plan to participate in any way in the restructuring of Ukraine’s debt and will require full repayment of it in time - in December 2015 - the whole issue of Eurobonds for 3 billion dollars. Russia belongs to the official creditors of Ukraine, and the settlement of the debt to official creditors (the State) is dealt with separately, explained Siluanov. Ukraine has received the funds in December 2013, when power was President Viktor Yanukovych.
