Legalization of marijuana in the United States has not led to its popularization

The legalization of marijuana in some states has not led to an increase in its use among adolescents. These are the findings of a recent research study conducted by a professor at Columbia University Medical Center in New York by Deborah Hasin and her colleagues.

Since 1996, 23 US states and the District of Columbia have legalized the medical use of cannabis. In Colorado, Washington, Alaska, Oregon, and the District of Columbia also legalized recreational marijuana use. Such legal solutions have traditionally caused a lot of criticism of opponents of legalization, which forecast growth of drug users, including teenagers.

However, research data obtained in 24 years on more than one million teenagers in 48 states, have not confirmed these fears. In an article published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry, said that in states that legalized the medical use of cannabis, initially had a large number of adolescents who use marijuana. This legislative changes have not led to an increase in performance.

“Our study provides reliable evidence that the legalization of marijuana does not lead to an increase in its use among adolescents. Moreover, in states where marijuana is banned, performance even higher,” - said Dr. Deborah Hasin.
